Desiree Matia is the Director of Arts Education at Propel Schools. She earned an undergraduate in Art Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an MFA in Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design. This fall, she joins Carlow's inaugural EdD program. “I appreciate Carlow's close-knit community, one with the University's values embedded throughout. The structure and affordability of the program will allow me to engage as a scholar practitioner and apply my learning to my current role and beyond! I am most excited to learn from the professors and colleagues in my cohort, as I know their unique areas of expertise will help shape my own experience. I hope to research Social Emotional Learning in the Arts, and how that can impact school culture and systems of learning.”We are #CarlowProud to welcome Desiree!

Meet the newest member of the inaugural doctoral cohort starting this fall.Shannon Ross is a High School Instructional Coach and English Teacher in the Hampton Township School District.Shannon graduated from Carlow University with her BA in English with teacher certification and completed a graduate degree in instructional technology from Wilkes University. Shannon shared, “My wonderful experiences as an undergrad at Carlow prepared me to find success in the secondary classroom and in my role as an instructional coach. Because this program gave me both the theoretical and practical knowledge I needed to walk into a classroom ready to succeed, the same focus on a scholar-practitioner mindset in the Doctoral program solidified my choice to attend Carlow. I’m excited to specialize in the Curriculum and Learning strand to expand my knowledge beyond individual classroom and school level thinking while exploring and researching the complexities of education at a systems level. As an instructional coach I get to see the amazing teaching and learning that takes place across all grade levels and academic disciplines in my building. Expanding opportunities for student-led, inquiry-driven learning, leveraging AI for teaching and learning, and the potential for instructional coaching to drive meaningful change are all areas I am excited to explore. I 'm excited to collaborate with the Carlow faculty and the other educators in my cohort as I decide on a meaningful area of research.”Welcome Shannon! For more information about Carlow’s EdD program, visit:https://lnkd.in/gYgrj6jV

Congratulations to Dr. Marris McClure Sweeny, Program Director for Early Chidhood at Carlow. She recently published an article, Storytelling and error: challenging pioneer ontologies in early childhood education in the journal of Pedagogy, Culture, and Society. Marissa shares,"In this study, we challenge traditional ideas in early childhood education (ECE) that treat childhood and adulthood as complete and autonomous stages. These conventional views often overlook the rich perspectives, especially those from Indigenous cultures, which see children as whole and complete beings from the start. Using art-based methods, we examine Montessori’s idea of ‘control of error’ through an intersectional lens, exploring how recognizing and honoring mistakes can enrich ECE. We delve into the cultural significance of errors—both intentional and accidental—drawing from our unique backgrounds and our shared belief that children are deeply connected to the world around them. One of us, a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, integrates the tradition of beadwork taught by his elders, where mistakes are kept as a reminder of human imperfection. The other, a white cisgender woman and Montessori-trained educator, reflects on the complexity surrounding errors from her experiences as a feminist motherscholar and early educator. By intentionally sharing our diverse stories, we, a gay Citizen Potawatomi man and a cisgender white woman, aim to redefine and enrich pioneering concepts in early childhood education.Figure 3:A series of images and videos made by my five- and three-year-old children who were working alongside me and continually interrupting me while I prepared this manuscript. I have included them as a complement: An intentional error to show that while an academic paper and its presentation may be one thing, two things can be true at once. There is always a background to the story even if I have been encouraged to edit it– to notice the error that reveals the completeness of my humanity and to correct it."To view the article:https://lnkd.in/e2C94Cpe
